No Man’s Sky Fishing: Change the Conditions Before Burning Through More Bait

Published October 5, 2026Article illustration 1

If the same fish keeps appearing, another stack of bait may not solve the problem. In No Man’s Sky, the fishing location is more than a backdrop. Decide which catch you are looking for, then compare its conditions with the water in front of you.

Start with a target, not a promise of a rare catch

Hello Games’ Aquarius feature notes explain that catches vary with planet, depth, time and weather. The Fishing section of the Wonders catalogue records catches and provides species information. Fishing Rig blueprints are available aboard the Space Anomaly.

Choose one gap in your catalogue and read the available clue before travelling. If the entry is incomplete, make that uncertainty part of your plan instead of assuming an online screenshot shows a universally productive location. A useful note might be “try this environment next,” rather than “this planet guarantees the fish.”

Change one condition at a time

Record a short baseline: planet, approximate fishing spot, observed time and weather, and bait used. Make a small number of casts, then decide which condition to change. This is a practical comparison method, not a claim that a small sample proves a catch rate.

For example, if you move to another planet and switch bait simultaneously, a new catch will not tell you which change mattered. If a depth clue is the reason for moving, keep the bait choice stable while trying a more suitable spot. You will leave with a clearer next step even if the desired fish does not appear.

The Exo-Skiff provides a floating fishing platform and dedicated cold storage. Treat it as access and storage support, not a universal upgrade to the probability of every fish.

Read the bait effect before spending the stack

The Fishing Rig accepts specialist bait and edible items. Look at the effect shown for the bait you actually selected. Do not transfer a percentage from an old screenshot to a different food, game version or catch requirement.

Keep a reserve if the bait was expensive for you to prepare. Decide in advance when you will review the location instead of committing the entire supply out of frustration. Repeating an unsuitable setup is not made more informative by making it longer.

Use traps for a different purpose

Automated Traps offer passive collection according to the water conditions where they are placed. They are an alternative activity, not evidence that a particular manual-catch requirement has been satisfied.

If you enjoy collecting while exploring, use them as that kind of tool. If you are following an active expedition milestone, read the current milestone text separately. Aquarius’ original 2024 expedition announcement is historical and does not establish that its event or rewards are currently available.

End the session with either the intended catch or one concrete observation about where to look next. That is more useful than a pile of repeated catches and no record of the conditions that produced them.
