A backpack full of presents can still produce an awkward trip around Pelican Town if you have not checked who likes what. A more manageable early routine starts with a few villagers, an item you can replace, and the Social tab. The aim is to remember a relationship rather than optimize every resident at once.
Choose the recipient before choosing the item

Open the villager’s Gift Log from the Social tab and check preferences you have already learned. Do not turn a category such as flowers, fish or cooked food into a promise that every villager will welcome every item in it. Individual exceptions make a remembered reaction more useful than a broad rule copied without the recipient’s name.
Start with two or three people whose routes already overlap your normal day. Keep a small note pairing each name with one confirmed item you can spare. That is a practical organization choice, not a hidden bonus mechanic. It reduces the chance of giving an expensive object simply because it happens to be selected when you approach someone.
Check the weekly boxes before making another trip

For ordinary gifts to non-spouse villagers, the usual limit is one per day and two per week, with the gifting week beginning on Sunday. The Social tab checkboxes help you see what you have already given. Read them before crossing town with another present rather than relying on your memory of which session contained the last gift.
Consider a simple plan: you give one confirmed gift on Monday and another on Thursday. On Friday, check the record instead of assuming a third ordinary gift is still available. You can still make the visit useful by talking and learning about the character. This routine deliberately leaves friendship-point maximization aside so the schedule remains easy to follow.
Treat a birthday as its own preparation task

A birthday gift can be given even after the usual two weekly gifts. Check the calendar and the recipient’s preference before the date, then reserve the chosen item somewhere you will not accidentally sell or use it. The exception is a reason to plan a specific present, not a reason to assume every additional gift ignores the weekly limit.
If you are unsure about an item, do not guess merely because it is rare. The useful preparation note is the recipient, birthday and confirmed preference. Keep advanced exceptions, such as special items or spouse gifting, separate from this ordinary-villager routine; adding every exception to a beginner checklist makes the basic decision harder to see.
Use the response to improve the next visit

After giving a present, read the response and inspect what the Gift Log records. If it was poorly received, change that recipient-item pairing instead of deciding that the whole item category is bad for everyone. If it was welcome, note how easily you can replace it before committing your last copy of a useful ingredient next week.
Finish the week with a small review: which visits fit naturally, which required a long detour, and which gift choice remains uncertain? Reduce the route if it crowds out the parts of the game you enjoy. A sustainable social habit can be only a few conversations and well-chosen gifts; it does not require a full-town delivery service every day.
